I have just uploaded a short video to Youtube showing some of the route and a few sections for the first 3 days of the Kaikoura six day trial. It was filmed with a helmet cam and I don't believe it will win any academy awards but it will give you a feel for what the trial will be like. It starts with some footage of the "Blue" loop then there is a walk through of 4 sections. It finishes with a short ride along the "Yellow" loop.

The next Club Trial proposed for the 19th clashes with the S.I Champs in Nelson so the committee have decided to cancel that event.

Instead we will be holding a  ClubTrial/Training day the prior weekend, the 12th (mothres day), at the Waimak Practice area.ystart time

Normal start time, we will put some pegs in and hold a short informal trial with some opportunity for some practice and training.

This weekend will be another working bee at Kaikoura on Saturday and Sunday.

The emphasis will be on the sections for the final 2 days at Mt Fyfe and possibly some more work on the loops for the first 3 days.

Saturday we will be meeting at Schroeders on McInnes Rd at 9am. Sundays venue will be dependant on how much we get done (how many people turn up) on Saturday.

If you are able to come and help out please contact either Paul Jackson 0274325738 or Derek 0274323646.

Well it probably won't be remembered as the wetest trial we've ever had but it might go close for the quickest. In the pub with drink in hand and a bowl of hot chips in front of me and it wasn't even 2 o'clock.

I had rung Glenn the day before and he had said he was too busy to come to the trial (which I later realised was code for, "I've seen the weather forecast") so I travelled alone and joined eight other hardy souls for a day in the mud. To be honest I had considered staying in bed but I decided I needed the practice in the wet for the upcoming Kaikoura Six Day. And practice I did. I practiced dismounting on the left, dismounting on the right and a bit of dismounting off the back. I almost had an occasion to practice dismounting over the front as well but anyone who was at Karl Clarks training day will know I've got that one mastered.

Alan and Ross had spent the day before in the constant heavy rain putting in the sections, so even though the rain had eased to just constant "not-so-heavy" rain and because there was only nine of us they decided we should only ride one lap. Music to my ears that was, untill I worked out that they still wanted us to ride each section four times. So off we went as a group and rode each section four times before moving onto the next one. This turned out to be an ideal format for a small number in the conditions and meant we all finished early and was able to warm up in front of the fire at the Governors Bay Pub.

The sections were pretty much what we've ridden before at this venue but the wet put a whole new perspective on things. After the long hot summer this was a bit of a wake up call for us all. Sections 1-3 were  slippery hill climbs and a slippery gully and sections 4-10 were slippery hillclimbs and slippery rocks. I struggled all day with Davie making me feel like the old man that I am. I did have the last laugh however managing a clean on the last attempt at section 10 something he wasn't able to do. That made me feel a bit better but didn't erase the 70 point thrashing he gave me.

In the other grades Ross was too good for Alan in Intermediate, Jon was well ahead of Kendall in the twin shocks (nothing like the thrashing I had to endure), Jacob was our only Junior and Richard easily won the Clubman class after Tony was forced out by a leaky radiator (what do I keep telling you Tony "Ya Shoulda........".

In the end even with the bad weather and my horrendous score, I still had a good time and was (like everyone else) was still smiling at the end. In fact I think the only one with a bigger smile was the farmer. He was loving the rain!

Thanks to Alan and Ross for going out in the rain and putting in the sections

Cheers

Scotty

Section setting for the upcoming six day is now well under way with around fifty of the eighty five sections to be put in for the first three days having been cleared and arrowed, and with any sort of luck the remaining thirty five will be completed this weekend. The three days are going to consist of three different loops, a different loop for each day, and at this stage the plan is to run the first day over a loop of 18 kms with 24 sections to be ridden twice, the second day will be a 21km loop with 30 sections to be ridden twice, and the third day is to be an 18km loop with 30 sections to be ridden twice. Thats right 114kms and 168 sections in three days, this of course will be weather dependent and the loops may be shortened if the weather becomes a little inclement which isn't going to be the case. The loops are going to be run so that a refueling stop has been incorporated, this will require a second fuel can which will be transported to the designated point on the trail. The loops have all been ridden on one tank of gas but I have run out and believe me it is a long walk out, especially if you don't know where you are. The ride between sections consists of four wheel drive track, sheep track, open paddock, and river bed and will be rideable for all abilities. Sections have been set to allow non stop rules to be used, most sections have been pegged with natural boundaries therefore negating the need to perfect the Kaikoura turn. Expert grade will follow the red arrow, intermediate the yellow, presidents the green of which there is one in every section and follows an intermediate line, and the clubmen will ride between the red and white markers. The clubmen sections will vary in severity with one or two on each day that may require the lower end riders to take a five, this has come about due to some terrain being too good to leave out for the other grades therefore creating a tough obstacle within the section. We have had some clubmen riders helping in section clearing and they have been consulted about difficulty as it can be difficult remembering back to being a clubman rider and things we didn't like. The idea of this trial is to get everyone who enters to the finish line on Monday afternoon and feeling the great sense of achievement that will come with it. There will be cut off times put in place to start your second lap due to the length of days and the thinking at the moment is that if you don't make the cut off then you will be given fives for the rest of the days sections therefore giving a result instead of a DNF but we will keep you posted on this. Entries are now open and can be found on the website and remember that there is a close off date for six days riders so enter now as this is going to be a one off event, don't hang off to see how it goes this year and enter next year as I can say with reasonable confidence that with all the work involved there won't be a next year six day. The three day trial will be run on the same format as usual with four laps of ten sections per day. I don't know about you but the thought of riding 288 sections in six days with a maximum loss of 1440 points sounds entertaining. There will be some photos of sections and terrain to follow next week. If you would like to know anything or just want a natter give me a call at home 03 313 4009, or 0274325738. See you soon. As many of you may know we are trying to put together a team to compete at this years Trials Des Nations (World Teams Championship) being held in France on 7-8 September.

To add to the value of this trip we will also be attending the final rounds of the Outdoor World and European championships the week prior also being held in France. The French World rounds are renowned for being the biggest and toughest on the calendar so should be very spectacular.

We are requiring a maximum of 4 male riders and 3 female riders to make up the teams. The grade standards required for the males would be equivalent to riding our Expert and some harder while the Ladies standards will cover a mixture of grades within their sections from Intermediate through to Expert level as they need to cater for a wider range of abilities.

We will also be requiring some minders to assist both teams and a final required number of these is not yet known (as the men’s and ladies comps are on different days and 1 minder can cover both teams) but will be between 2-4.

Funding for this trip is currently very limited and the majority of the costs will have to be self funded by each rider/minder. An early budget of between $6.5k - $8K each rider is likely. Minders will be slightly less. This is not final until firm arrangements and bookings are made as there are different ways and means of dong things such as bike hire and events entered.

Applications from interested riders and minders are open to all who wish to be a part of a great trip. Team selection will be confirmed by the Trials commissioner and myself by early May. Please forward your interest in applying to be on the team to me ASAP.

Currently Vicky Fox and I are putting together the trip although any other assistance is welcomed especially in the area of funding.

The current Itinerary for the trip is as follows:

Depart Auckland approx 26 – 27 August to Paris.

Drive directly to Isola, French Alps, Southern France.

Final World + European Championship 31 Aug - 1 Sep.

Two days site seeing??

Drive to Le Chatre, Central France.

TDN 7 -8 Sep

Possible site seeing Paris 1-2 days

Depart Paris approx 11th – 12th Sep?

Back in NZ by 13th – 14th.

Total time away will be the best part of three weeks. If any one would like more information please feel free to contact me at:   warren.carron@clear.net.nz or 0212213597.

Regards

Warren Laugesen
