The trial this weekend will be at Purau Valley (Fishers Property) not at Puaha Valley as was intended. They are in the middle of lambing there at the moment. Hopefully we will be able to go there next month instead. So see you all Sunday 10.30 (DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME) at Rurau Valley.

Hi all

Well what a great weekend to finish off the South Island series!
Two great properties, day one at Horsford Downs and day two at Omihi.  The weather was good being slightly overcast on both days.  A bit windy on day one so the riders had to contest their balance as well as the obstacles.

In Presidents Grade Brendon Wadsworth had a great weekend losing only three points for the whole weekend (no points lost on the Saturday) giving him the overall win for the weekend.  Followed closely by Ross Bristol losing 14 points for the weekend coming in second for the weekend and Alan Honeybone who also had a great ride coming in for third on 28 points.

Junior Grade was won by David Trewin from Kaikoura losing only seven points for the weekend and Gareth Wadsworth from Blenheim coming in for second, well done boys!

First and second placings were fort closely in the Clubman grade John Mortimer taking it out on 28 points and Gordon Anderson in second place on 32 points, Richard Cripps on third place and David Atwool in fourth place.

Intermediate Grade was another closely fort grade.  Daniel Clark taking out both days on 23 points and John Regan on 29 points and a great ride for Brady Inwood to come in third, Also a top ride by Stef Downes to come home in 4th for the weekend and a 2nd finish on the 1st day. Looks like Stef has been putting in some hours on the new bike and look out next year boys. top effort guys and Girls!

A Grade was won by Wellington rider Carl Robson and also is looking good on the bike. Callum Anderson took a very good second place, unfortunately Jason Hibbs had some bike trouble the first day and was unable to finish day one but came in second on day two with just returning to the sport after a foot injury.

Expert Grade was taken out by Motueka rider Karl Clark who lost an impressive 39 points for the weekend.  Blake Fox in on second on 209 points, third was Brad Hibbs on 211 points.  Jason Baker from Blenheim had some bike troubles on the weekend which unfortunately put him in fourth for the weekend.

Another great weekend held by the Pioneer Club.  Looking forward to seeing you all at the New Zealand Champs at Labour Weekend in Hamilton.  Remember to all those who are going to contact Jim if you require accommodation click here for all the information.  It may be a good idea also if you are crossing the ferry to get in now as I'm sure there it will be busy due to the Rugby World Cup finals the same weekend.

2011 South Island Championship Final Results

Junior Class was taken out by Pioneer Club rider David Trewin (GasGas) who looked on very good form on his new bike.  A big effort from Gareth Wadsworth (GasGas) from Blenheim who rode his first full year in Junior Class to take out second place.

Presidents Class was a closely fort battle between Brendon, Ross and Alan.  Brendon Wadsworth from Blenheim and Ross Bristol from Christchurch finished the year on championship points with Brendon (Scorpa) just taking out the win, Ross (Sherco) in second and Alan Honeybone (Sherco) also from Christchurch in third place.

Clubman Class was taken out by Blenheim rider David Atwool riding his four-stroke scorpa.  The next highest points collected were John Mortimer (TY) in second from Christchurch and Gavin Fox (Gas Gas) in third from Dunedin and Jason Hall from Nelson who unfortunately had an accident on the first day in Christchurch and was unable to finish the weekend who will return next year determined to claim a top three placing we all wish you a speedy recovery.

Intermediate Class - after competing in his second year in the South Island Championship series Daniel Clark (Montesa) from Riwaka took out the most competitive and largest class.  Closely followed by John Regan (Beta) from Christchurch and seventeen year old Brady Inwood Gas Gas 125cc rider from Lower Moutere took out third placing.  Intermediate grade was very closely fort with five to six riders capable to finish top three on any day with many of these riders heading north to the New Zealand Champs in October.

A-Grade Class -  Wellington rider Carl Robson (beta) took out a convincing win and was a huge effort by him to come to every South Island round.  Second place went to Nelson rider Callum Anderson on his new beta and is improving each time he rides.

Expert Class - Motueka rider Karl Clark (Beta) taking six from six wins and is looking forward to the New Zealand Champs after switching to a new bike.  Second place went to Blenheim rider Jason Baker (Ossa) and will also be heading north to the New Zealand Champs.  Third equal went to Brad Hibbs (Beta) from Invercargill and Blake Fox (Gas Gas) from Dunedin.  A huge effort by both of these guys who stepped up to Expert Class this year and was good to have more riders in the top class and hope it continues.

I feel that the South Island are heading in the right direction as far as the level of section setting with guys being able step up a grade without having the danger factor which in the future will allow the top grades to have more depth.  A great 2011 series even with the unfortunate events in Christchurch and date changes all clubs did a great job.  Look forward to the 2012 series.

Cheers
Debbie and Karl

It has been a while since my last report and I have been holding off so as being able to give out info on the supposed Oceania Challenge. This event for 2011 has been a disappointment to me. The Australians had been invited to attend in Easter but when that didn’t happen we extended the invitation to our NZ Champs weekend. Apparently when they [MA] advertised for a team they only had one applicant [according to their Trials Commissioner Colin Scott]. At this stage, although I have asked for confirmation that no team is coming, I am treating the 2011 event as a ‘no show’. I believe it is too late to try and get this match in place.

However, through MNZ staff and Board I am looking at the possibility of approaching Australia to see if we could contest Oceania 2012 around the time and place of the world rounds in Victoria next year. There would be a lot of benefits of this happening but I believe it may also become an extremely difficult idea to ‘sell’ to Australia. I will do my best!

Congratulations to all clubs who hosted Island rounds this year. From observations and reports it appears that you gave Moto Trials riders of NZ good competitions and were able to satisfactorily find winners and place getters in most classes. It is getting difficult to find a Junior class and that is a concern to me. I do believe that we will see growth in the Twin Shock class and any amalgamation that we can achieve between the classic fraternity and moderns can only benefit our cause.

A special thanks to Paul Mcleod and Colin Kelland who put this year’s calendar together and who are working on the next years. It is a difficult job and not made easier by clubs requesting changes [however no one could for see Chch earthquake]. Please give much thought to your ability to run an event at the time you are allocated as we do not want to change dates.

The rule book is getting a major re write and I have been asked to “tidy up” the Moto Trials section. I won’t go into all the detail as I have shuffled a few things here and there and tried to make it more ‘readable’ [which has been the objective of the re write]. On the way through I looked at some of the rules that have in my opinion out lived their usefulness and I have ‘tweaked’ them slightly. I will mention some of those that may be controversial and you will have a chance to view all when posted on the web for your approval in a month or so. Please read fully and report anything that you feel I may have ‘got wrong’. Main points:

-         5 penalty points given for not attempting a section [used to be 10]

-         Minimum size requirements for marker pegs and arrows

-         Maximum of 2 green arrows or gates for President’s line

-         Maximum of 2 orange arrows or gates for Experts line

-         Addition of rules for Gated Trials [as per Ravo Gated]

-         Scott Trials to be 30km minimum and 30 section minimum

-         Sections to be ‘closed’ to riders no later than 30 minutes after finish time

There are more slight wording changes and emissions to delete duplications but the above will be the area that will concern you the most. The 3 items that will have the most impact on the future will be…. losing 5 instead of 10 for not attempting sections and maximum number of arrows used. Losing 5 for not attempting will allow you to go to ‘Trial headquarters’ with an incomplete card and have 5s clipped for all ‘non attempts’. This will alleviate riders queuing at sections waiting for observers to give them 5s. We will still have to ride in numerical sequence and we will still have to attempt 80% of sections. The latter can be assessed at ‘Trial headquarters’.

An area that you may have expected some change is ‘classes’ [grades]. I have left this alone for now and it is hardly a secret anymore that I have a vision to overhaul the entire class structure. Some of you will know my agenda and it needs much discussion but I get limited opportunity to present it how I would prefer and that is in a discussion format. If you are interested in my vision I will be available to discuss with you at NZ champs [and no I will not be holding a forum this year].

Planning is on ‘track’ for NZ Champs and the Hamilton MCC is hoping to provide an excellent event.  Early planning on your part helps the organisers. Please consider this. See www.hamiltonmcc.org.nz for more info than you may expect. I will be in contact with trophy holders but this is a reminder to hunt them out and get them back….please.

Sandra Hallie [ hallie@xtra.co.nz ] has been asked and kindly accepted to be media liaison person for Moto Trials NZ wide. You may have noticed a few notices in coming events of “Dirt bike Down under” Magazine. Sandra is hoping to grow this area and it is important that you liaise with her; she would like to know when your events are and contact persons for that event 3 months before the event. Please send her your 2012 calendars when you have them ready. [And send her update as you make amendments]. If you have any results or ‘newsy’ articles they would be appreciated as well.

It’s good to have Jake and Karl back in NZ. Well done to both of you for flying the NZ flag on the other side of the world. We wish Jake and Blake success in Australia over the Aussie Titles weekend

Stephen Oliver [ nonstopadventure@paradise.net.nz ] has compiled a very handy manual on many facets of Trials and dirt bike riding. He is offering these manuals to you free and you don’t get better than that.

Venues have been finalised for the Christchurch round of the 2011 South Island Champs. The ever present danger of after shocks and rock falls has made us decide to stay away from Banks Peninsula again and hold both days in North Canterbury. Day 1, Saturday 10th September, will be at Horsford Downs (Day 2 from last years Nationals) and Day 2, Sunday 11th September, will be at Omihi.

With both days being out that way people looking for accommodation might want to look in Rangiora, Amberley or North Western Christchurch. We advise booking NOW as there is also the Canterbury Motocross Champs on that weekend in Omihi as well.

If anyone is having trouble finding accomodation or would like to be billeted out, then drop us a line and we will arrange something for you.

Canterbury’s finest trials riders assembled at Matt Latham’s Western Valley trials paradise to experience ten of the world’s finest trials sections. Master section setter, Brent Downes, pegged a glorious mix of new elements and old favourites.

There were seven riders in the hotly contested expert grade (club expert = SI and National Intermediate). At the sharp end, Glenn’s experience kept him three points clear of another “Stella” ride by Buster Regan. NZ1 Stef and “Floater” Hainsworth had a good battle for third place – the mighty power of the Beta 125cc versus the tremendous stopping power and suspension travel of the TLR200. Plus, keeping everyone on their toes, the new and improving armourdilo mounted, slim-line club captain. Better still, the authorities let Dowelly out for the weekend.

There were six riders in the intermediate grade. A good battle between the club bean counter and Trewin junior for line honours. It was good to see our reigning president rekindling his love for the flat tyred wheeled motor.

Six riders in clubman A made for a good battle with the “Ze Kivi” pipping the Captain by one point. Clubman/intermediate line riding Kendall managed to hold off a strong challenge from our very own miracle of modern science/medicine - HRH Cripps. Great to see John Philp making the long haul trip from the South Canterbury Trials Club.

In clubman B, Shirley showed her fine class to first timer Adrian aboard a Team Regan TY250.

Crusty demons Dick and Rob had a good battle in Presidents grade until young Dick found a better offer.

In summary, trials was the winner on the day. Our new policy of swapping score cards appears to be working well. And despite common opinion, there is more to a good trial than a scorecard. Thanks to Sandra for the cheerleading and BBQ.
